OpenAI Confirms Plans to Build Humanoid Robots, Altman Says the 'Brain' Is What Matters
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on the Sources podcast that the company will build humanoid robots itself, arguing that a human-like form makes sense because the world is designed for humans. But the real challenge, he stressed, is developing the "brain" that powers the robot.
Altman said he expects the company to produce an impressive demo prototype in 2027, though robots walking on the streets are still years away. OpenAI has not disclosed what the demo will include, the robot's design, or when outsiders could get close to the device. The company currently lists 27 open robotics positions, covering motion control, state estimation, actuator control, mechatronic actuators, and manufacturing supply chain.
According to job postings, OpenAI is developing mechatronic actuators in-house, integrating motors, transmissions, sensors, and thermal management systems, as well as manufacturing and supply chain capabilities for scaled production. The company's short-term goal is general-purpose robots that assist skilled workers in building infrastructure; its long-term goal is personal robots capable of a wider range of tasks.
