HUMXN Exchanges Free Home Services for Footage to Train Robots
HUMXN, an AI data collection lab, announced it will provide free plumbing, electrical, HVAC, duct cleaning and carpet cleaning services to homeowners in Minneapolis, Chicago and Miami, in exchange for permission to record technicians at work using wearable capture devices. The recordings will be used to train AI robots.
Founder Thomas Unise said next-generation AI will need more than text and images from the internet. "Robots need to understand how professionals interact with the physical world," he said. He added that technicians complete millions of skilled tasks every day, but there is little standardized data available for AI systems to learn from. The company aims to build infrastructure connecting this knowledge with companies developing next-generation intelligent devices, while ensuring those who create value share in the benefits.
HUMXN said it is difficult to capture natural behavior in lab settings. Working with homeowners allows it to collect data across different homes, equipment types, fault scenarios, individual technicians and environmental conditions. The data can help AI models learn the full process of a technician's work, including inspecting the site, testing systems, choosing tools, handling unexpected situations and judging the quality of the work.
Under the program, homeowners receive eligible services for free, while service workers are still paid as usual. In essence, HUMXN is paying residents for permission to record video and collect real-world training data inside their homes. The company chose the three initial cities to gather data from different climate conditions. Eligible residents with repair or service needs can check the HUMXN website for qualification.
