NVIDIA CEO Calls for 'Seat Belt' Approach to AI Regulation
On October 19, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang spoke in London about AI regulation, opposing a "sudden braking" or overly strict regulatory approach. Instead, he advocated for a "seat belt" strategy based on smarter safety standards, monitoring mechanisms, and preventive measures against incidents.
Huang compared AI to critical infrastructure such as power grids and water systems, arguing that outright bans or burdensome regulations are not the right path. He said he frequently discusses risk monitoring and safety protocols with AI researchers, and suggested that the UK could serve as a neutral platform for AI safety dialogue between the US, China, and other parties.
NVIDIA also pledged $250 million over five years to support AI safety research in the UK. Addressing market concerns over data center construction delays and postponed AI company listings, Huang described them as "growing pains" of rapid industry expansion. He noted that the core capabilities of modern AI have been established, and startups must learn to take on financial and governance responsibilities as the market matures.
