MicroPort Robotics President: Autonomous Surgery Model Achieves 95% Success in Animal Trials
At the 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference held in Shanghai on October 20, He Chao, executive director and president of Shanghai MicroPort Medical Robotics, said remote surgery is the core track for domestic robots to lead innovation.
He introduced the team's second-generation remote surgery system, which operates over conventional hospital networks with encryption and real-time monitoring. The team led the release of the world's first remote surgery industry standard and clinical guideline, and obtained the world's first registration certificate for a remote surgery robot. The system has since received U.S. FDA and European CE approvals, enabling rapid deployment in multiple countries. About two weeks ago, it began large-scale remote surgery procedures in Italy. The system has also enabled a remote operation from West China Hospital to Brazil over a physical distance of roughly 1,900 kilometers, with a communication link of nearly 30,000 kilometers.
He Chao also revealed that MicroPort Robotics, together with Peking University, Fudan University and NVIDIA, has developed a two-layer autonomous surgery large model. Due to the scarcity of real medical samples, 97% of training data is generated by AI world models, while only 3% comes from real clinical data. The team has completed the world's first autonomous surgery animal experiment using the large model, achieving over 95% overall success with no pre-programming, as all actions and corrections were performed autonomously by AI.
