GM adds AI personal assistant to OnStar, starting with Cadillac Lyriq
General Motors announced at its GM Forward event in New York on Oct. 21 that it is adding a personal AI assistant to OnStar, the subscription-based connected car service the company launched 30 years ago.
The OnStar AI Assistant will debut on the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq EV in the coming months, with more GM vehicles to follow. The company also said it will launch a new OnStar mobile app in 2027 that will complement and sync with its in-car software, replacing the existing OnStar Guardian app launched in 2020 as well as brand apps for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.
The AI assistant is an in-house effort that puts agentic AI at the center of the service. Sterling Anderson, GM's vice president of global product and chief product officer, said OnStar is transitioning into a connected intelligence platform, providing predictive and proactive support to owners. Vehicle cameras will connect to the software to offer live views and crash and safety recordings, and users will be able to control certain vehicle functions, including climate, via voice.
The announcement comes after GM was ordered by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to stop sharing certain consumer data with reporting agencies. GM said customers will be able to decide what data is shared, recordings will have time limits and be encrypted, and neither GM nor OnStar will be able to access Connected Camera recordings.
