Uber expands OpenAI partnership, rolls out ChatGPT Work to all 30,000 employees

By AI123

On October 22, Uber announced an expanded partnership with OpenAI, making ChatGPT Work available to its entire global workforce of roughly 30,000 employees. The rollout follows a pilot with 1,000 employees earlier in 2026.

ChatGPT Work, launched in July 2026, is an enterprise-focused AI agent designed for corporate teams to deploy across various workflows. Sumanth Sukumar, Uber's VP of engineering, said the earlier pilot spanned departments including finance, operations, and product, with about 80% of early users being non-engineers. Employees used the tool to analyze operational data for trends, localize training materials for different markets and languages, and build personalized interactive dashboards for daily work.

Sukumar said Uber aims to make AI tools available across the company while giving teams room to experiment. Earlier in 2026, for instance, Uber paired 30 AI engineers with teams for two weeks to automate key parts of their jobs, an exercise it called “AI pods.”

Uber did not disclose spending on the new rollout. Sukumar said the company will track how employees use the technology, the workflows they develop, and how it helps them work, using those outcomes to guide future AI deployment. Uber said OpenAI worked closely with the company on integration.

The expansion is part of OpenAI's broader push to scale its enterprise business as it competes with Anthropic.
