The Browser Company to sunset Arc browser on December 22, pushes users to AI-first Dia

The Browser Company announced on October 22 that it will sunset its design-forward Arc browser on December 22, 2026, directing users to its AI-first browser, Dia. The company cited the rising cost of keeping a browser secure in the age of AI, adding that Dia was built from the ground up to meet current security standards and that its engineering and security teams will focus there moving forward.

The wind-down is staged in three parts. As of October 22, new Arc accounts can no longer be created. On November 23, Arc Search on iOS and Android will lose AI features including “Browse for Me,” and users will lose the ability to sign in or sync tabs, though the app will continue working as a basic local browser. On December 22, Arc will stop working entirely on Mac and Windows; accounts will be deactivated, and personal data will be deleted within 30 days. Arc Search will also be removed from the Google Play Store.

The company says Dia now surpasses Arc in speed, stability, and security benchmarks. Several core Arc features will carry over to Dia, including “Profiles” for switching between work and personal environments, vertical tabs as an optional sidebar layout, and “Pinned Tab Groups,” formerly Folders. Passwords, bookmarks, extensions, and history will transfer to Dia, and Arc features will remain free with AI optional.

The shutdown closes a chapter that began in 2025 when the company stopped active feature development on Arc. The Browser Company was acquired by Atlassian for $610 million in 2025. CEO Josh Miller has previously said that Arc is built on the proprietary Arc Development Kit (ADK), which also powers Dia, and that open-sourcing Arc would mean giving away Dia’s intellectual property.
