Tesla Confirms Self-Developed AI Mapping System to Roll Out With FSD v15
Tesla Vice President Ashok Elluswamy said during the company's Oct. 25, 2026 earnings call that Tesla is developing its own AI-based mapping and navigation system, which will be introduced with FSD v15 and gradually expanded to more navigation functions over the following months.
Responding to a shareholder question about speed-limit recognition, parking, and route selection, Elluswamy agreed that Tesla should not rely on third-party maps. He described the new architecture as a fresh approach, not just another map version. The system will collect street data from Tesla's fleet, including traffic speeds, stop signs, traffic lights, and parking lots, and overlay information such as potholes, obstructed entrances and exits, and dangerous intersections to improve route planning and driving smoothness.
The AI-driven map system will also support personalized route planning and tie into voice control of FSD. Tesla plans to roll out Grok-based voice control in fall 2026, allowing users to customize routes by voice. The new map is expected to first handle the start and end stages of trips in FSD v15, then cover remaining navigation capabilities, including parking and voice control, in the months after. Tesla also introduced a “Preferred Routes” feature in its summer 2026 update, which prioritizes routes users have driven before; it evolved from an alternative-routes option introduced in 2022.
