ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent Seek Over 3 Million Nvidia RTX Pro GPUs: Sources
ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have combined orders for more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards, according to sources cited by Reuters, with the potential order value estimated at over $35 billion based on a list price of roughly $11,400 per card.
The RTX PRO 5500 is a professional workstation GPU based on Nvidia's Blackwell architecture, featuring 84GB of GDDR7 memory, around 1,398GB/s of memory bandwidth and a maximum power draw of 600W. It is positioned for workloads including agentic AI, physical AI, simulation and graphics processing. The Chinese companies plan to use the cards mainly for AI inference, the Reuters report said.
Nvidia cannot guarantee it will meet all demand, and actual deliveries could fall well short of the order intentions, the people said. Reuters has previously reported that Nvidia expects global RTX PRO 5500 production to stay below 3 million units in 2027, as the company also allocates capacity to its next-generation Rubin platform.
The purchases come as U.S. export restrictions on advanced chips to China remain in place. H200 exports require specific licenses, while the higher-performance B300 is not available under current restrictions. With AI models and services still expanding, access to deployable computing capacity has become a more immediate concern for Chinese tech firms.
Tencent declined to comment, while ByteDance and Alibaba did not respond to requests for comment. It remains unclear how many cards each company plans to buy and how they will be deployed.
