Sam Altman Biopic 'Artificial' Releases First Trailer, Revisiting OpenAI's 2023 Drama
The first trailer for Luca Guadagnino's Sam Altman biopic, "Artificial," has been released, with Andrew Garfield starring as the OpenAI CEO. The film dramatizes Altman's sudden ouster from OpenAI in 2023 and his reinstatement five days later, and is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day.
The trailer leans into a haunting, unsettling tone rather than a traditional biopic mood. Against unsettling music, Garfield delivers a robotic rendition of Altman praising AI, calling it Pandora's Box and warning that "countries will fall" and "industries are gonna collapse." In one scene, he walks past a room stacked with weapons inside a bunker while describing the future as inevitable, followed by shots of celebratory success and screaming into the void.
The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for "Call Me by Your Name" and "Challengers," and features a cast including Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, and Mark Rylance.
Regarding distribution, Amazon MGM originally planned to release the film but dropped the project after investing $50 billion in OpenAI, saying the movie would be better served by a different studio. Netflix, A24, and Focus all passed, and Neon later signed on as distributor.
