Trump Voices Support for AI, Rejects Critics' Disaster Scenarios

By AI123

On September 13, U.S. President Donald Trump voiced support for the development of artificial intelligence, likening AI critics to “forces with an extremely negative inclination” and saying the disaster scenarios they describe will not come true. He added that the United States must remain the global leader in the industry.

The remarks came after several top U.S. AI company executives called for a slower pace of AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned in an X post on September 12 that AI agents could gain the ability to take over the entire internet within the next 6 to 12 months, potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in economic losses. Elon Musk, who runs xAI, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman both said they agreed with Amodei. Altman also said OpenAI will not pursue an IPO this year for safety reasons.

The warnings weighed on global AI-related stocks. During Asian trading, Nasdaq futures fell 1.3%, while SoftBank, an investor in OpenAI, tumbled as much as 13.2% in Japan. Chip-related companies including Kioxia, TEL, TSMC, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics also declined. Separately, Anthropic published a threat intelligence report on September 10 describing how its Claude model has been abused for activities such as weapons development, cyber operations, surveillance and fraud. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned and publicly warned about the potential dangers of AI.

The report also said the Chinese and U.S. governments plan to hold an AI safety dialogue within the framework of bilateral talks in September 2026.
