Trump to Convene AI Industry Leaders at White House
House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sept. 15 that President Trump plans to convene artificial intelligence industry leaders at the White House during the week starting Sept. 21, pushing back against apocalyptic warnings about AI. Johnson said Trump believes “you are not all going to die in 10 years” and that warnings about AI risks are a “scam.”
The debate over AI safety and regulation has intensified in Washington and Silicon Valley. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned in the second week of September, accusing OpenAI and Anthropic of “gambling with our lives.” An Anthropic executive said the probability of AI destroying humanity exceeds 10%. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace, with Elon Musk and Sam Altman expressing agreement.
The Trump administration has favored rapid development. During the third week of September, Trump repeatedly posted on Truth Social that AI risk concerns are a “scam” and criticized resistance to public data centers. On Sept. 14, Trump called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, saying “robots are not going to take over the world, and AI is not going to control the globe.” Huang echoed Trump's stance, saying “we don't need any new laws or regulations.”
Other administration officials also pushed back against excessive regulation. David Sacks, co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, encouraged tech companies to “continue to lead the frontier,” while the Pentagon's under secretary for research and engineering, Emil Michael, described the panic as an “organized campaign.”
