California Governor Signs Executive Order to Advance AI Oversight and 'Emergency Shutdown' Mechanisms
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order on September 18 to accelerate independent oversight of artificial intelligence and promote the development of an AI 'emergency shutdown' mechanism. The order also calls for nationwide adoption of California's AI framework.
Under the executive order, the state will study a range of AI regulatory proposals, including requiring AI companies to build 'emergency kill switches' for their most advanced models. Newsom said earlier this week that he was considering further action on AI safety, including possibly convening a special legislative session, in response to recent warnings from AI researchers about existential risks posed by the technology.
Newsom cited the federal government's failure to act as another reason for the executive action. Previously, President Trump had dismissed concerns about AI risks as a 'hoax.'
