Peking University Third Hospital and United Imaging unveil AI agent for multi-disease spine MRI reporting

By AI123

In September 2026, the Department of Radiology at Peking University Third Hospital, together with United Imaging Intelligence, officially released what is described as the world's first multi-disease MR spine "one-scan multi-report" AI agent. The system has been deployed across the hospital's main campus and four directly affiliated branches. Leveraging large model capabilities, it generates structured reports covering 76 diseases and imaging abnormalities from a single spine MRI scan, improving reporting efficiency by 56%. The project was initiated in July 2025 and took 18 months of underlying redevelopment.

The AI agent is embedded into the clinical workflow, moving from single-disease detection to comprehensive multi-disease analysis. It performs global systematic analysis of input MR images and evaluates spinal segments individually. The system integrates lesion detection, anatomical localization, feature description, and structured report generation, allowing radiologists to review and confirm the initial report rather than starting from scratch. Unlike standalone AI tools operating outside the PACS environment, this agent is natively integrated into the AI PACS system, so radiologists can view AI results directly on their routine reading workstations without switching between systems.

According to Yuan Huishu, the efficiency gain is only the visible outcome; the deeper value lies in improved report quality. The structured output makes reports more precise and standardized, and also supports continuous assessment for patients requiring long-term follow-up. The team is now expanding clinical validation and plans to conduct external multicenter studies.
