Prince Harry says AI companion chatbots are more dangerous for young people than social media
Prince Harry warned at the Clinton Global Initiative on Sept. 23, 2026 that AI chatbots designed for companionship could be even more harmful to young people than social media. He described the technology as “more persuasive, more intimate, and more powerful,” adding that “AI is learning how to enter our relationships. It doesn't just want your attention, it wants your attachment.”
In 2024, Harry had warned at the same event about an “epidemic” of anxiety, depression and social isolation among young people linked to social media. He and his wife, Meghan, later founded The Parents Network through their Archewell Foundation to support affected families.
Harry said the organization had made progress, but technological developments had made the fight more difficult. He noted growing awareness among families, experts and advocates about potential harms, but said “bans, settlements and payouts are incomplete remedies.”
His comments came against a backdrop of legal action over social media's effects on teen mental health. In August 2026, Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion and strengthen child-safety measures on Facebook and Instagram as part of a landmark settlement.
