Amazon to Invest Over $100 Million in New Indiana Robotics Plant, Set to Open in 2028
Amazon has announced plans to invest more than $100 million in a new robotics manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana, with operations expected to begin in 2028. The facility is expected to create 300 technical manufacturing and engineering jobs, with an average annual salary of nearly $100,000, well above the state's median household income.
The announcement follows an August 2026 plan for a robotics manufacturing center in Austin, Texas. Once both facilities are completed, Amazon's number of robotics manufacturing plants will grow from two to four. The company's current plants, both located in Massachusetts, produce robots such as the Sparrow robotic arm and the disc-shaped autonomous mobile robot Proteus; these robots are used exclusively by Amazon.
Amazon has expanded its robotics operations since acquiring Kiva Systems in 2012, deploying more than one million robots across more than 300 facilities, where they help process about 75% of customer orders. The company says its robots have helped reduce recordable workplace injury incidents by more than 40% while also creating well-paid technical roles. Holly Sullivan, Amazon's vice president of worldwide economic development, said Indiana was chosen for its strong manufacturing base and Amazon's existing operations in the state.
