Broadcom Agrees to Lend Anthropic Up to $42 Billion for AI Infrastructure
Anthropic disclosed in its IPO prospectus that Broadcom has agreed to provide it with up to $42 billion in loans dedicated to infrastructure spending, according to a Reuters report on October 1. The funding equals roughly one-third of Anthropic's five-year TPU lease commitments, which total $125.2 billion. Broadcom may designate financing partners, and the debt instruments are convertible into Anthropic shares.
Anthropic said it deposited cash into a restricted account with Broadcom in April 2026 and may be required to make additional deposits under certain circumstances. The prospectus also warned of a potential conflict of interest because Broadcom serves as both hardware supplier and lender. A significant payment or performance default could accelerate most lease obligations and restrict Anthropic's ability to use the $42 billion facility to cover related payments.
Anthropic expects to become Broadcom's largest chip design customer in 2027. Broadcom has projected AI semiconductor revenue of about $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and about $230 billion in fiscal 2028. The companies' relationship spans compute supply, equipment leasing, and financing, which Anthropic said is unique among its major partners.
Market observers see the move as Broadcom following Nvidia's strategy of using balance-sheet strength to finance customers and drive chip sales. Some Wall Street figures have also questioned the AI investment logic, calling the arrangement a concentrated bet on both companies' ability to generate enough revenue to support the financing.
