Cohere launches North 2 with agent spend controls and cross-session memory
Cohere has released North 2, the latest version of its enterprise agent platform, introducing user quotas, rate limits, organization-wide budget caps, and a redesigned agent harness. The update also brings cross-session memory and a shared knowledge library for teams, with support for cloud, on-premises, and fully air-gapped deployments.
According to Cohere, the memory capability lets agents retain context across sessions instead of starting from scratch each time. Paul Teyssier, VP of Product AI at Cohere, said memory allows context to persist across sub-sessions and agents. The redesigned harness can handle complex multi-step processes autonomously while keeping humans in the loop for designated decisions.
North 2 adds more granular controls for managing automations across an organization and supports Cohere's own models or models customers already use. North Admin provides role and permission management, real-time usage monitoring, and token-level consumption and limits, integrating with existing identity and access management systems. Security features include scanning prompts and responses for PII, detecting prompt injection, and using autonomy policies to restrict agent actions while routing critical decisions to humans.
Cohere first introduced North in January 2025 as a secure enterprise workspace, positioning it against Microsoft Copilot and Google Vertex AI. The company did not provide performance benchmarks for North 2, and said pricing depends on the scale and complexity of each customer's deployment. Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI have also rolled out spend controls for their agent platforms.
