Microsoft has opened preorders for its Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a developer-focused desktop PC priced at $6,000, with shipping expected to begin in November 2026. The system was first announced in June 2026 alongside the Surface Laptop Ultra and is designed for local AI workflows.

The Dev Box is powered by NVIDIA's RTX Spark N1X chip, with 128GB unified memory and 2TB removable storage, and can run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters. It offers two USB-C ports, one USB-A, Ethernet, DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1b, housed in a chassis with an anodized aluminum grille. As part of Microsoft's Project Zenith, it comes with Windows 11 Pro and preinstalled tools including Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot and Python.

Microsoft and NVIDIA have said they see seamless AI computing across cloud and local hardware as the future, but the price may limit adoption beyond enterprise customers. The Dev Box is a larger, more expensive version of NVIDIA's earlier DGX Spark AI computer, which launched at $3,999 and now sells for nearly $7,000 in the 128GB configuration.
