Tencent Weighs Up to $5 Billion Offshore Bond Sale, AI Development Among Uses

By AI123

Tencent Holdings is considering selling up to $5 billion in offshore bonds, which could be denominated in US dollars and offshore yuan, with issuance potentially as early as October 2026, according to people familiar with the matter.

The tech giant already raised nearly $4.7 billion in June 2026 through dollar and yuan bonds, its largest bond sale since 2020. Proceeds were earmarked for debt refinancing and general corporate purposes, including the development of AI products and services.

The potential offering comes as major Chinese technology companies step up financing for AI infrastructure. Tencent has been increasing capital expenditure on AI projects and computing power, reporting capital expenditure of RMB 52.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 176% year over year. Free cash flow was negative RMB 13.8 billion in the quarter, while the company still bought back about HK$16.9 billion in shares.

Tencent has roughly $22 billion in offshore notes outstanding, with no public bond maturities in 2026 and a dollar bond due in 2028, according to Bloomberg data. The company also plans to launch Hy4 later in 2026 and operates one of the largest AWS-like cloud services in China, offering computing power to clients building their own AI platforms.
