Anthropic Donates 5% Stake to Charitable Fund as AI Giants Plan Nearly $300B in Philanthropy
Anthropic announced on October 22 that it will donate 5% of its shares to a new philanthropic fund. If the company is valued at $2 trillion at its IPO, the fund could reach $100 billion. The company's seven founders also pledged to give away 80% of their personal wealth.
According to The Washington Post, Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX are preparing one of the largest charitable donations in modern history, potentially totaling nearly $300 billion. OpenAI's charitable foundation reportedly holds about a quarter of the company's shares, valued at over $180 billion, and has already spent $855 million on public welfare projects. Elon Musk said he plans to give every American child a share of SpaceX in 2027, with total donations possibly exceeding $11 billion based on recent SpaceX valuation.
The report noted that most of these "donations" are unlisted equity or future commitments, and the actual usable amount depends heavily on the IPO valuations of Anthropic and OpenAI as well as SpaceX's share price. The Post interpreted the move as both advancing technology commercialization and responding to potential impacts on employment, income distribution and social stability.
