Anthropic S-1 Filing Highlights AI Data Centers' Dependence on Natural Gas
Anthropic, which is preparing to go public, has acknowledged in its S-1 registration statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the generative AI industry relies heavily on natural gas for power. The filing says data centers are increasingly dependent on natural gas, whose main component is methane, and that fuel price volatility and supply chain constraints could hinder the company's AI data center expansion plans.
Anthropic also cites climate change as an operating risk, noting that rising global temperatures caused by burning fossil fuels could increase its operating costs, including higher electricity and water bills for cooling data center servers. Some planned data centers would rely on on-site gas turbines for power. Anthropic has announced a $50 billion investment plan to expand its data center footprint in Texas and New York.
The filing warns that competition for natural gas supply and pipeline capacity is likely to intensify as major cloud providers and data center operators race to build new facilities, potentially pushing up gas prices. Regulatory risks are also highlighted: if regulators determine that Anthropic's power procurement measures affect other electricity users or the grid, they may impose restrictions, backup power charges, or other requirements. Failure to secure reliable gas supply or pipeline capacity could delay or cancel some data center projects.
Anthropic said these issues could ultimately constrain its business growth.
