Seawolf Capital Discloses Short Position in AI Cloud Firm CoreWeave, Citing GPU Lifespan and Funding Costs

By AI123

Seawolf Capital, the investment firm co-founded by investors known from The Big Short, has disclosed a short position in AI cloud computing provider CoreWeave. Co-founder Vincent Daniel laid out the firm's bearish thesis on October 27, 2026, drawing parallels between CoreWeave's business model and asset leasing companies such as Transocean and AerCap Holdings.

In a Substack post and an interview with Business Insider, Daniel argued that the economic lifespan of GPUs is far less certain than that of oil rigs, aircraft, or shipping equipment, while competitive chip supply is expanding at a rapid pace. He said the short thesis is not a bet against the broader AI industry, but rather a judgment on capital availability and financing costs for CoreWeave.

Daniel noted that tech companies are competing with governments for financing resources, and a tightening monetary policy cycle further constrains cheap capital. He pointed to CoreWeave's projected free cash flow gap for 2027 and current leverage levels, saying the company would need to raise tens of billions of dollars in incremental capital on value-accretive terms to sustain its model.

Seawolf said its analysis of CoreWeave is still at an early stage. Earlier this month, co-founder Danny Moses compared CoreWeave to WeWork. CoreWeave, a major player in the neocloud segment, leases high-performance AI computing capacity primarily built on Nvidia GPUs.
