TSMC to Raise Wafer Prices 3% to 6% From January 2027

By AI123

TSMC will raise wafer-out prices by approximately 3% to 6% from January 2027, with advanced process nodes seeing the largest increases, according to supply chain sources.

The company's 8-inch fab utilization exceeds 100%, while processes below 45nm are running at full capacity. Order visibility has extended into 2030. The move is expected to raise customers' wafer costs and ripple through the supply chain, putting pressure on rivals including Samsung Electronics, Intel, UMC and Vanguard International Semiconductor, as well as OSAT firms and IC design houses.

The price increase reflects broad demand growth from AI data center buildouts. Demand now extends beyond GPUs, ASICs and HBM to mature-node products such as PMICs, MCUs, MOSFETs, driver ICs, analog ICs, MEMS, mixed-signal chips and sensors. High-speed optical components, silicon interposers and packaging materials are also benefiting from higher AI server shipments.

TSMC is not applying a uniform increase across all nodes. High-priced advanced nodes such as 2nm and 3nm are seeing larger increases, with customers still queueing for capacity, while mature and specialty nodes are being priced individually based on product, utilization and customer situation. UMC, Powerchip and Vanguard have also announced price increases, with effects expected to last into 2027.

For IC design houses, high-end GPUs and ASICs have more room to pass on costs, while mature-node MCU, PMIC and consumer IC prices face market competition, making full cost pass-through uncertain. In addition, packaging, substrate, material and memory prices are also rising in 2027, adding to overall cost pressure.

Cost factors are also behind the move. TSMC's US fab construction costs are estimated to be four to five times higher than in Taiwan, and the initial 2nm ramp is expected to dilute gross margin by 3 to 4 percentage points, with overseas fabs potentially adding 2 to 3 percentage points of margin pressure over the next few years. The company remains confident in 2026 demand, continuing to expand capex and raising its full-year US dollar revenue growth forecast.
