OpenAI brings Codex to Chromatic handheld with new Game Studio plugin at Developer Day

By AI123

At its 2026 Developer Day, OpenAI joined ModRetro to bring the Codex AI agent tool to the Chromatic retro handheld through a new plugin called Game Studio. With the plugin, users can describe game requirements in natural language, and Codex helps generate the corresponding program.

Chromatic is ModRetro's retro handheld, with a design inspired by the Game Boy Color in appearance, resolution and button layout. It features a custom LCD, aluminum body, supports original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, and can also run user-created games. Game Studio includes a Chromatic emulator, letting developers test games on a computer before streaming them to the actual device.

After a game is complete, users can write the program to a dedicated Chromatic cartridge. According to on-site demonstrations, Chromatic can run user-made games with blank cartridges.
