Restate raises $20M to scale durable infrastructure for AI agents

By AI123

Restate, a Berlin-based startup building durable workflow infrastructure, has raised $20 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The company said it has signed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts in recent months, including with vibe coding platform Replit, and will use the capital to compete with Temporal.

Founded in 2022 by Stephen Ewen, Restate develops an execution engine designed to keep multi-step workflows resilient to crashes and network interruptions. The rise of AI agents has made this capability more critical, as agentic workloads tend to run longer and follow less predictable paths. Ewen noted the platform was not originally built for agents but turned out to be a natural fit for the problems they pose.

In the durable infrastructure space, Temporal is a major player. The company, founded in 2019, announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier in September 2026. Restate is much smaller but has already attracted notable customers such as Replit. Its engine uses proprietary storage, replication and redundancy layers rather than an external database, which Ewen says makes it fast and lightweight.

The startup also serves Fortune 500 customers, including in the financial sector. The fresh funding will be used to build a go-to-market team, hire more engineers and expand its San Francisco Bay Area office to be closer to current and potential customers.
