ChatGPT adds locked chats with PIN and Face ID protection
OpenAI announced on Tuesday that ChatGPT users can now lock conversations to keep sensitive chats private. Locked chats can be secured with a four-digit PIN or via Face ID/Touch ID on supported devices.
Unlike temporary chats, locked chats can be reopened at any time. The feature is designed for moments when users want to share their device without exposing personal conversations. Locked chats appear in a dedicated section, separated from regular history, pinned chats, and search results. With Memory enabled, locked chats maintain a separate memory that does not affect general memory.
OpenAI noted that locking does not provide end-to-end encryption or change data retention. Resetting the PIN permanently deletes all locked chats and associated content. The feature will be available to most ChatGPT plans, excluding ChatGPT for Healthcare, and is rolling out from Tuesday.
